Curriculum

Coursework at Brakebills covers all major branches of magic recognized by modern scholarship, including Physical magic, Natural magic, Healing, Illusions and Knowledge; qualifed students will also receive training as Psychics. Class size is limited to 20. Beginning with Third Year, after students have been matched with their Disciplines, regular seminars in specialty areas are mandatory.

The emphasis at Brakebills is on the practical aspects of magic-working, with a particular focus on mastery of the Circumstances. Students are not encouraged to conduct research into the theory or origins of magic, as prior work in that area has been shown to be counter-productive at best. Likewise, offensive or "battle" magic is not recognized as a legitimate area of study, and is strictly forbidden.

Instructors at Brakebills are considered to be among the most distinguished magicians in their fields. In recruiting them Brakebills has drawn not only on the North American magical community, but also on the international community as well -- Brakebills takes a "multicultural" approach to magical study, with none of the insularity that characterizes certain other magical colleges.

Among the traditions represented on the Brakebills faculty are Egyptian street magic, Micronesian weather magic, Tuareg necromancy, and Siberian/Muscovite hybrid techniques. There are also several non-human faculty members as well, but please be assured that they pose no threat to either students’ health or their sanity.
