The 1st Street
Community Garden

Welcome to the 1st Street Community Garden homepage!

Garden History:
According to neighborhood records going back to the Revolutionary War, this unassuming lot located on a quiet residential street in Park Slope, Brooklyn has always been vacant. No one has ever attempted to build a residential or commercial building on the site, and no certificate of ownership for the land has ever been located. If local legend is to be believed, this may be due to the lot’s association with a number of disappearances over the years.

Sometime in the late 1970s, a small group of anonymous Park Slope residents approached New York City's Trust for Public Land< about turning the unused lot into a community garden. The Trust granted them usage of the land and, thanks to generous help from the NYC Parks and Red Department's Green Thumb Program and the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, locals have enjoyed the lot ever since!
